Goggles

You will encounter many cyclists on the road who don’t wear cycling glasses. And that’s a shame because cycling glasses are an accessory that will make your ride better and safer! A good pair of cycling glasses not only protects your eyes from the sun, but also from the wind, insects, and flying pebbles shooting away from the wheel of the cyclist in front of you. The lenses are also made to accentuate colours or actually push them into the background, improving your vision. And when you can see better, you’re more confident on your bike!

A good pair of cycling glasses

Every pair of cycling glasses is different. Especially since the noses and faces that such glasses come to rest on are always very different. So, good bike eyewear

  • Must fit well against your face so that your eyes are well protected.
  • Needs to have adjustable nose pads for an extra snug fit.
  • Requires a condensation-resistant coating to keep them from fogging up.
  • Needs to be scratch-resistant, so that any low-hanging branches or ricocheting rocks won’t cause permanent damage.

The premium models also have interchangeable lenses so you can use your cycling glasses in different conditions:

  • The dark lens is ideal when it’s sunny outside.
  • The yellow lens provides better visibility in rain and fog.
  • The transparent lens helps you see better in the dark.

Why are cycling glasses important?

Professional cyclists no longer need convincing. But many recreational cyclists are not yet keen on the benefits of good cycling glasses. Especially since not everyone wants to look like an extreme cyclist with such flashy frames on their nose. But many brands these days make bike eyewear that looks very casual, just like regular sunglasses. And there are simply lots of benefits:

  • Protection from the sun: if you are blinded by low-level sun, you cannot possibly cycle safely. So cycling glasses provide extra safety, while also giving your eyes some rest in harsh light and protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Protection from rain and cold: you aren’t always lucky enough to ride your bike in the bright spring sunshine. Rain and cold wind that makes your eyes water can also create unsafe situations. Cycling glasses offer protection in these cases too. The roundness of the lens also ensures that headwind pushes raindrops away from the lens.
  • Protection from branches, insects, and dirt: a ricocheting stone or low-hanging branch can damage your eyes considerably. The rounded shape of the lens and frame perfectly fit the contours of your face, giving you maximum protection from obstacles and projectiles.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about cycling glasses

Finding the perfect pair of cycling glasses is very personal. In any case, choose one that fits your head well, protects your eyes sufficiently from the elements and flying pebbles, and, of course, matches the rest of your outfit!

When buying new cycling glasses, it is best to think about the following things:

  • The (weather) conditions: the more sunlight, the darker your lens. If you often cycle in the shade or at night in the dark, choose glasses with brighter or fully transparent lenses.
  • The lens type: a standard lens simply protects your eyes from UV radiation. But you can also opt for a lens with an extra coating, a photochromic lens with glass that changes colour as needed, or a polarised lens that combats glare.
  • The frame: you have a choice between full frame, half frame, or no frame. Full-frame glasses protect a larger part of your face and provide a larger field of vision. In turn, half-frame glasses are a lot sturdier than no-frame glasses, which give you unobstructed vision and are very lightweight.
  • Prescription lenses or not: if you wear glasses in everyday life, then you also need prescription cycling glasses or glasses with an insert: a mini pair of glasses that you clip behind the lenses.
  • Ventilation: condensation on your glasses reduces your vision, and that can become dangerous. Make sure your glasses have enough ventilation holes.

Cycling glasses are obviously worn on your nose, in front of your eyes. Make sure the temples of the glasses fit over the straps of your helmet, so they don’t get stuck. You can tuck your glasses into the slots on your helmet when you’re not wearing them. If you do it the other way round, they will stay on extra well!

You can opt for prescription cycling glasses and have your optician sharpen the lens to the desired prescription. In some cases, you need an extra insert, and the optician will then put the right lenses in. Cycling glasses are also available with only a prescription reading part: particularly useful for cyclists who are farsighted. Finally, you can also opt for glasses with an insert: a mini pair of glasses that you clip behind the lenses of your own glasses. Useful when you don’t always need prescription lenses or change glasses regularly!
