Cycling socks
FAQ – frequently asked questions about cycling socks
Cycling socks are a much more important part of your cycling outfit than you might think. Your feet are the main point of contact with your bike. If your cycling shoes fit properly, you can transfer the power you generate with your legs to your pedals much more efficiently. But if your socks are too tight or too big, you sacrifice the comfort that is so important for your performance as well as your enjoyment.
While cycling, it is better not to wear regular socks or sports socks. Cycling socks are made of quick-drying, breathable materials that have a better fit and higher compression than normal socks. That compression reduces the chances of your muscles cramping. Sports socks are often too thick and thus do not fit in your cycling shoes, as they can pinch your feet that way. They also tend to have seams that cause irritation, especially at your toes, when cycling intensively.
Each pair of cycling socks is unique. Here are the things you should focus on:
- The right size: socks that are too big will lump up and cause pressure points. Socks that are too small can pinch your toes. So it is really important that your cycling socks fit properly.
- Thickness: cycling socks should not be too thick, but also not too slippery. Cycling shoes are already tight, so if your sock is too thick, it will pinch your foot. In turn, a sock that is too slippery will make your feet slide in your shoes, pinching your toes.
- The weather conditions: do you only cycle in the summer? Then a thin cycling sock will do. Do you venture out on cold days too? Then choose a pair with more insulation. Is it raining? Then waterproof socks are what you need.
- The length: cycling socks come in different lengths, from your ankles to your knees. A high sock is warmer than a low sock, so they’re better for winter. They also offer more protection from splashing debris or even during falls. And ultimately, the height of your sock can also just be a matter of taste.
