Sunglasses for clear and sunny weather with bright sunlight

Cylindrical lens

A cylindrical lens has a horizontal curvature. A flat cylindrical lens breaks up the light and can create a distorted image.

Category 1

Sunglasses with a CE category 1 absorb 20% to 57% of the light. These sunglasses are suited for gloomier days and primarily increase the contrast. This is useful, for example, when you are riding your bike on a very cloudy day or when it is snowing in the mountains.

Carbon cartridge

Carbon is used in water filters to remove chemicals from the water. Carbon cartridges must be replaced after using them for a certain number of times because their effectiveness will decline.

Category 4

Lenses with CE category 4 absorb from 92% to 97% of light. Suitable for very sunny conditions, during which the light is also brightly reflected (think of a glacier, for example).

Category 3

Lenses with CE category 3 absorb from 82% to 92% of light. Suitable for sunny conditions.

Category 2

Sunglasses with a CE category 2 absorb 57% to 82% of the light. These sunglasses are suited for slightly cloudy to reasonably sunny days.

Carving

The type that most recreational skiers will be used to, carving skis have a distinct hourglass shape to make them very easy for turning. In most cases they will be between 70 and 80mm wide, widening to as much as 110mm at the tips and tails. Because the ski is curved, when the metal edges are dug into the snow they offer a natural turning circle. Epitomised by their name, they offer the best carving opportunity of all ski types and allow users to gracefully glide down the groomed runs – providing they have perfected the art of the parallel turn of course!

Edge

Knives can have various cutting surfaces, or edges. The three most common are serrated, partially serrated, and smooth. Smooth blades are very suitable when you do not need much force or you want to work very precisely, e.g. when shaving, skinning, and peeling. A serrated blade has a sharp bite that is highly suited to heavier cutting, like when you want to cut through a rope. A partially serrated blade has both a smooth and serrated edge.

Exit pupil

The exit pupil the circle of light that falls on the eye through the binocular. If the exit pupil is too small, your eye will actually be receiving too little light. Healthy eyes have a pupil size of 2-7 mm. The pupil will contract in bright light and expand in low light.

Extreme limit

The extreme limit of a sleeping bag (according to the European standard EN 13537) is the value at which an experienced woman wearing enough clothing can remain for six hours maximum without risk of death from hypothermia. This extreme value is incredibly uncomfortable for an experienced person in good physical condition with good gear. This extreme limit is hazardous for the inexperienced, people who are not in good physical condition, and who do not have the best gear. It is therefore recommended that you do not expose yourself to the extreme limit of a sleeping bag.

Enduro wool (Bridgedale socks)

Enduro wool is not as fine as merino wool. It is the first spin of wool, which guarantees softness and quality. Other wool yarns are spun from recycled wool and can be uncomfortable next to skin. Enduro wool also provides excellent thermal and moisture-regulating properties.

G

Global needle

Not all compasses can be used anywhere in the world. This is due to the inclination of Earth’s magnetic field. The world is divided into five different zones.  Many compasses can be used in multiple zones. Zone 5 (Australia, New Zealand, and the southern oceans) can be problematic at times. In that case, you need a compass with a global needle.

GLONASS

The Russian GLONASS is a navigational satellite system with global coverage. A navigation device using both GPS and GLONASS has better reach and higher precision. This is particularly beneficial in the city or deep valleys.

Graphene

GRAPHENE is the thinnest and lightest element ever discovered by mankind. GRAPHENE is also the strongest material on the planet, stronger than diamond and 300 times stronger than steel, all in the thickness of one atom.

G-1000

G-1000 is the cornerstone material of Fjallraven. Used it in everything from backpacks to jackets and trousers. It’s a densely woven fabric made from 65% polyester and 35% cotton and, by using Greenland Wax, it’s adaptable to a whole variety of different climactic conditions. So with the right care, it’ll last for ages and join you on all kinds of adventures.

G-1000 Silent

As the name suggests, this version of G-1000 is designed to make less noise when you’re moving around. The G-1000 is brushed, meaning it’s smooth and soft to the touch and quieter than other versions of G-1000, making it well suited to hunting. Aside from that, it offers the same tried and trusted properties of G-1000 Original and comes pre-waxed for wind- and water-resistance. Also mosquito proof.

G-1000 Lite

G-1000 is a very study, rigid material but sometimes we want something lighter. Enter G-1000 Lite, a less stiff, more flexible version of the original. And to avoid reducing its strength we added rip-stop threads to boost its resistance to tears. It comes lightly waxed to offer some resistance to light winds and showers and, although it doesn’t safeguard against mosquitos, it still offers UV protection.

G-1000 HeavyDuty

G-1000 is tough, but G-1000 Heavy Duty goes a step further. Impregnated with Greenland Wax on both sides, it takes durability to a new level. This does mean it’s less ventilating than regular G-1000, so we use it for products where resilience, rather than airflow, is a priority. This translates to reinforcement materials – on places that are susceptible to extra hard wear – and for many of our bags and backpacks.

Micron

A micron, or micrometre, is used to indicate the fineness of the openings in water filters. The finer the filter, the more impurities it blocks. A protozoa (e.g. Giardia) is a minimum of 5 microns. A bacteria is a minimum of 0.2 micron. A fine water filter will protect you from protozoa and bacteria. Viruses can be very small (up to 0.004 micron), which means that they can still be in filtered water. This is generally not a problem in Western countries, but it can be wise to protect your drinking water from viruses, using UV light for instance, in certain situations in developing countries.

Powder

Powder skis can be even wider than big mountain skis and in some cases stretch to 140mm underfoot. The reason for this is so that they can cope with the deepest snow. Most powder skis also feature the ‘rockered’ tip, providing even more stability away from the piste. The biggest difference compared to general skis is the fact that the ski itself offers a reverse camber – with the tip and rail of the ski thinner than the mid-section.

PrimaLoft

PrimaLoft is a waterproof fibre that serves as a synthetic alternative to goose down. It’s an environmentally conscious product.

Polyester

Polyester is a durable fiber that retains little moisture. Thanks to the curvature of the fiber, polyester has very good resilience and is very light. Polyester is also very colourfast and wrinkle free.

Polygiene technology utilizes natural silver salt to inhibit the growth of odor-causing microorganisms; it lasts the life of the garment and does not wash out

PFC - free

PFCs (per- and poly-fluorinated chemicals) are all completely man-made chemicals which do not occur naturally. They are commonly used in DWR (durable water repellent) coatings and waterproof membranes. The DWR we used as a standard for years was a long-chain (C8) fluorocarbon-based treatment that is highly effective and extraordinarily durable. Unfortunately, its by-products are toxic and persist in the environment, a combination that makes it unacceptable despite its excellent performance. For instance, PFCs are now so widely dispersed in the environment that even the tap water we drink has a low level of background pollution Governments around the globe have now required chemical companies to stop making C8 DWR. For a DWR product to classify as “PFC free” no PFCs have been used in the material or manufacturing of the product.

Product Life-time guarantee

A life time warranty is been defined as a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship that has no time limit lower than the expected lifetime of the product to make a claim, and this warranty is labelled by the supplier on the product.

Rectangular sleeping bags are straight and generally do not have a hood.  This makes them roomier, but they’re also heavier and have a larger packing volume than a mummy sleeping bag.

Racing skis

The longest of all skis on the market, race skis are built with high speed in mind. Although they used to stretch over 200cm long, top racers in the world nowadays use skis no longer than 160cm. Both highly flexible and responsive, they allow for incredibly nimble footwork so they’re perfect to take on the slalom at high speed on firm snow. However, they aren’t very versatile; should you be used to skis with a shorter turning circle, you may struggle with them at first!

Rocker

The tip of rocker skis/boards rises earlier, making them even more manoeuvrable. Useful for deep-snow enthusiasts and freeriders. Less grip on the piste.

Re:Flex

Re:Flex offers more flex, feel, and cushioning than traditional disc bindings, in a package that’s universally compatible with all current mounting systems, including 4x4, 3D and The Channel. The minimized, cored baseplate with Living Hinge disc not only reduces the weight and footprint of the binding, but also bends freely for a more natural feel that unlocks the board’s true flex.

Windactive

Lafuma has created the Windactive® brand for windproof and water-repellent products. Apparel items incorporating Windactive® technology prevent air from passing through the fabric thanks to various methods (weaving, membrane, coating). As wind is a major source of body chill, protecting the body with a Windactive® fabric stops the wind-driven freezing effect. The perception of cold is accentuated by moisture or rain. This is why all our Windactive® products are given a water-repellent treatment. This finish, which causes drops of water to roll along the surface of the fabric and thus not penetrate it, prevents the feeling of cold caused by moisture. The result? Complete comfort, and a fabric that stays as light as ever.

Water column

The water column indicates how waterproof the fabric is. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric.

0 - 1299 mm: Not waterproof

Close focus

Close focus is the minimum distance an object must be for it to be brought into focus.

Comfort rating

The comfort rating of a sleeping bag is the minimum temperature (according to the European standard EN 13537) at which a sleeping bag is still comfortable for a woman wearing thermal underwear. Given that some people are more sensitive to the cold than others, this is a very personal aspect. Other factors, such as the quality of the sleeping mat and tent, also have an impact on how cold the sleeper feels. The comfort temperature for men is slightly lower in general than the standard comfort temperature.

EVA foam

EVA, or ethylene-vinyl acetate, is a synthetic material that is most often used in a foam form. It is lightweight, flexible, and muffles sound well. It is often used as a midsole or footbed.

Footprint

A footprint is a ground cloth matching the precise dimensions of your tent. A footprint keeps your tent clean and undamaged.

Field of view

The field of view is how many horizontal metres you can see at a certain distance (usually 1,000 metres). It is easier to follow moving objects in a wide field of view.

Fill power

Fill power is the measure used to express the quality of the down. The value is expressed in CUIN (CUbic INch), which represents the down’s filling power/resilience/counter-pressure. The higher this number, the better the quality of the down. 650 fill power = 650 CUIN / oz = 650 CUbic INch per ounce. This means that 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of down can fill 650 cubic inches (= volume van 10.7 litres). 400 - 500 is considered good quality, 500 - 600 is considered very good, and 700 - 800 is considered excellent.

FuseForm

This manner of weaving was developed by The North Face; thicker, more durable yarn is woven together with thinner fibres at places that are prone to wear, like the shoulders and elbows. This technique makes it possible to achieve various thicknesses in a single piece of fabric, which means that fewer seams are required and the total weight is reduced.

Polyamide is a synthetic fabric that is highly rip-resistant, absorbs little moisture, and is wrinkle-free. But it is sensitive to pilling. Polyamide holds its shape the best out of all textile fibres (including when wet) and is extremely elastic.

Polygiene

Photochromatic

Photochromatic or self-tinting lenses automatically adjust to the amount of light or UV light. In bright light, the lens or glass darkens.

Powder rocker

You will find the properties of a rocker between the bindings, and those of a camber towards the nose and tail. Lots of easy turns and 'buoyancy' in powder, lots of grip.

R-value

The R-value is a measure of how effective an object’s insulation is. The higher the value, the better the thermal insulating properties are.

Rectangular sleeping bag

1300 - 4999 mm: Water resistant to light rain and snow but not resistant to any kind of pressure.
