United By Blue is in 2010 gestart vanuit het verlangen om de plek waar we leven en spelen te behoeden. In plaats van louter geld te doneren wilden ze iets concreets doen, met een tastbare invloed op onze oceanen. Er is weinig meer tastbaar dan banden uit rivieren vissen of plastic flessen van de stranden rapen. United By Blue deed dan ook de belofte om per item dat ze verkopen een pond afval uit het water op onze planeet te verwijderen. En dat gebeurt door opruimacties die worden georganiseerd door het bedrijf zelf. Ze hielden zo’n eerste opruimactie in dezelfde week dat ze hun eerste T-shirt verkochten.
